Ear Thermometer FAQs

Why measure body temperature at the ear?

The TenderTemp Ear Thermometer measures the infrared heat of the eardrum, which is very close to the temperature control center of the brain (hypothalamus). Unlike other common measuring instruments, ear measurements can provide instant detection of changes in the body temperature. Additionally, body temperature can be measured safely and conveniently in only one second..

How does the TenderTemp work?

TenderTemp measures infrared energy that is radiated from the eardrum and surrounding tissue. This energy is collected through the lens and converted to a temperature reading.

Can the TenderTemp thermometer hurt you in any way?

No. TenderTemp does not send out any infrared waves or heat at any time. It only acts as a receiver of heat.

Is it safe to fully insert the probe into the ears of children and babies?

Yes. The probe is too short to reach the eardrum. Plus, the ear canal in babies and young children is smaller than the probe of the thermometer, so it cannot reach sensitive parts in the ear. It is important to straighten the ear canal as explained in the detailed instructions and to gently insert the probe into the ear. When resistance is felt, maintain the position and do not push any further.

Why must a probe cover be used with the TenderTemp?

TenderTemp is calibrated to work with a probe cover; therefore, measurements taken without a probe cover can result in inaccurate readings. Besides their hygienic function, probe covers also protect the infrared sensor from earwax, which can be harmful to the sensor.

How many times can I use the same probe cover?

For sanitary purposes and to ensure accuracy, a new probe cover should be used for each measurement. Furthermore, repeated use with the same probe cover may result in a loose-fitting cover, leading to inaccurate measurements.

Can the probe cover remain on the tip after measurement?

For sanitary reasons, we recommend disposing used probe covers.

How do TenderTemp ear measurements com-pare to oral, rectal and axillary readings?

TenderTemp readings are comparable to an oral temperature. While the ‘normal’ range for oral temperatures can be 97.0°F (36.1°C) to 99.0°F (37.2°C), rectal temperatures are generally 1.0°F (0.5°C) higher. Conversely, axillary (under the arm) temperatures are generally 1.0°F (0.5°C) lower.

How accurate is the TenderTemp?

TenderTemp’s accuracy has been proven in clinics and they are manufactured to meet the same standards as other professional devices.

Why do I get different readings when taking multiple measurements?

Different readings can occur for many reasons. Some means of prevention are: using new probe covers for each measurement, waiting 30 seconds between successive readings and using proper technique for straightening the ear canal.

Does the TenderTemp require calibration?

In accordance with standards, we recommend that your TenderTemp be checked for accuracy every two years. Send your TenderTemp, postage prepaid along with $15.00 for calibration, cleaning, shipping/han-dling, tax and insurance to MABIS Healthcare, Attn: Calibration/Repair Dept., 1931 Norman Drive South, Waukegan, IL 60085 USA.

Is TenderTemp still accurate after being dropped?

The TenderTemp performs a function check every time it is turned on. As long as a message error (ERR) is not displayed and proper technique is used, the results should be accurate. It is recommended to have your TenderTemp checked for accuracy every two years.

How often should I clean or disinfect my TenderTemp?

The lens or house should be cleaned as necessary with an alcohol swab or a soft cotton swab moistened with alcohol (70% Isopropyl). Be careful while wiping the probe tip and lens. Do not saturate the unit. Do not use paper towels – the fibers may scratch the lens. Make sure that liquid does not enter the interior of the thermometer. Never use abrasive cleaning agents, thinners or gasoline for cleaning. Do not immerse in water or other cleaning liquids. The thermometer is not waterproof.

Is TenderTemp waterproof?

No. Never immerse the thermometer in water or other liquids.

Which ear should I use for measurements?

Typically, there is no significant difference in ear temperatures. However, special situations such as ear canal drainage, deformities, infection or other conditions may preclude the use of an ear thermome-ter in one or both ears.

Why do I get different readings from left to right ear?

Because of the different amount of dirt and earwax present, or due to individual variations, temperature readings can vary slightly. Also, the position of the probe tip can affect results.

Is TenderTemp suitable for infants as well as the elderly?

Yes. However, it is possible for the elderly, infants under 3 months of age and those with compromised immune systems or other medical conditions not to have an elevated temperature even when they are ill.

Can I use TenderTemp for measurements at other points of the body?

No. TenderTemp is designed for ear measurements only.

Can TenderTemp be used to measure basal body temperature to determine ovulation?

Clinical studies are not complete on the use of TenderTemp for monitoring basal body temperature.

Is TenderTemp suitable for animals?

TenderTemp has been developed for the use in humans only.

Does room temperature or cold weather affect readings?

As long as the operating temperature is between 50.0°F and 104.0°F (10.0°C and 40.0°C) a temperature can be taken.

Does earwax affect the results?

Small amounts of earwax do not have an effect; however, large amounts may cause inaccurate readings.

Can I use TenderTemp when a child has an ear infection?

Ear infections usually cause considerable pain, and pulling on the ear to straighten the ear canal may create additional discomfort. It is recommended that the measurement be performed in the unaffected ear or at a different site with an appropriate device.

What is the lifetime of TenderTemp?

Under estimated clinical use, the life expectancy is approximately 2-5 years. However, abuse of the TenderTemp can result in product failure. It is recom-mended to have your TenderTemp checked for accu-racy every two years. Send your TenderTemp, postage prepaid along with $15.00 for calibration, cleaning, shipping/handling, tax and insurance to MABIS Healthcare, Attn: Calibration/Repair Dept., 1931 Norman Drive South, Waukegan, IL 60085 USA.

How long should the battery last?

The battery life is approximately 1,000 measure-ments.

What type of battery is needed for replacement?

TenderTemp uses one CR2032 lithium battery.

What is the warranty on TenderTemp?

Your TenderTemp Ear Thermometer is guaranteed to be free of manufacturing defects for a period of two years, from the date of purchase, under normal use. This limited warranty does not apply to use in any clinical or commercial applications. The complete terms and conditions of the warranty can be found in the Detailed Guidebook
